Falling Skies Season 2 Episodes 1 and 2 Review

Falling Skies

After what seems like an eternity waiting for the second season of Falling Skies, it finally arrived as a two hour, two episode back to back event on TNT last night. The two episodes were, episode 1, Worlds Apart and episode 2, Shall We Gather at the River?

So how did we get here? Well, if you remember, at the end of season 1, the 2nd Mass were on the verge of going all in with an attack against a command ship even though they were vastly under-resourced. As what’s left of the group try to head back to base, the aliens offer Tom the chance to parlez with them and against Weaver’s advice, he boarded their ship and off they went.

It is now six months later as episode one opens and the 2nd Mass have ambushed an alien patrol and are in the middle of a fierce firefight. During the fight a human wanders into the Ben’s sights and ignoring his older brother’s orders, he accidentally shoots his dad. Yep, Tom’s back. The trouble is, the group have experience with people who have come back from alien capture before. One of them turned into an asset, but the other, Rick turned into a traitor. So, the group are cautious around Tom as they don’t know which of the two outcomes they’re going to get. Things are different from Tom’s point of view as well and the new dynamics within the group are something that he will have to get used to.

One of the big changes that Tom will have to get used to is that the group are no longer going to be based in a single place. Intelligence says that they are about to face an alien attack that they cannot withstand and that’s made them as nervous as a Partypoker player who has just placed all his chips on one hand. So, at the opening of the second episode of season 2, “Shall We Gather by the River”, we see the group preparing to move out en masse to avoid the impending attack. Another big change seems to be that Pope has been given some responsibility within the 2nd Mass, or maybe he simply took it? Anyway, roles have been reversed in that Pope was once the unpredictable wild card of the bunch that they sometimes had to take a gamble with and now that seems to be Tom’s role, and it is a role which obviously worries Tom as he doesn’t want to be a danger to the group.

If the first two episodes of season two are anything to go by then the Falling Skies will continue to be as good as we remember even though some new characters have joined and some old ones have departed the main players are still there and the story writing is as good as ever. Can’t wait for episode three.
