Olivia Dunham is an FBI agent who begins investigating a growing number of unexplained events, none of them good. When her FBI partner and secret lover John Scott’s life is threatened by chemical contamination, Olivia’s desperate search for answers leads her to a scientist called Dr. Walter Bishop. The problem is though that Olivia is unable to question Dr. Bishop as he is locked away in a mental asylum and won’t speak to anyone from the outside.

Olivia turns to the only person who may be able to enlist Dr. Bishop’s help, his son, Peter Bishop. As Olivia, Walter and Peter team up to investigate the event, their work gets them noticed by Phillip Broyles who is a special agent for Homeland Security, and who is also heads up something called Fringe Division which investigates paranormal events and terrorism.

Ultimately, the two Bishops and Olivia end up working for Broyles in order to try and resolve unexplained phenomena that keep cropping up, and at an ever increasing rate.

As they investigate more and more events, the team start to see that the events may be leading to something bigger. Along the way, they also pit their wits against and organisation known as Massive Dynamic and its head of operations Nina Sharp. It seems that Massive Dynamic and Walter Bishop have another connection too….
