There are three principle families, those of Stark, Lannister and Baratheon. In the first season, Robert Baratheon is King and he asks his trusted old friend to become his chief advisor. Eddard accepts the post, albeit reluctantly, as it will give him the opportunity to investigate the death of his predecessor who he believes was murdered.

Eddard discovers that more than one family of Westeros is plotting to take the throne and some of the threats come from closer to home than the King may imagine, in the shape of his Queen, who is a Lannister.

Another family from across the seas, who were once themselves the rulers of Westeros, the Targaryens, are also plotting a return to power. As the story moves on, it becomes clear that Westeros is headed for war as more families join the battle, including the Greyjoys, the Tullys, the Arryns and the Tyrells.

What’s more, the threats to the land of Westeros are not just political. In the North of the land, an ancient Evil begins to awaken as Winter approaches.
