Grimm – Season 1, Episode 1 – "Pilot"
The Wolf thought to himself, what a tender young creature. What a nice plump mouthful… The Brothers Grimm 1812
In Portland, Oregon a college co-ed is out for a jog in the woods and sees something that causes her to stop. As she gets closer, she sees it is a small figurine. She picks it up to take a closer look but is suddenly violently attacked and she is thrown to the floor, screaming in terror.
Detective Nick Burkhardt is collecting and engagement ring which he intends to give to his girlfriend. At the same time his partner Hank Griffin is taking photos of him when he notices that Nick is watching a young businesswoman. Nick explains that he was making certain deductions about the woman’s life. However, as they leave, we see what Nick is really seeing. The beautiful young woman’s face is shown as an old hag, something Hank cannot see.
Nick and Hank receive a call directing them to a hideous murder scene which has been reported by hikers. The forest service say that the body parts of a woman have been found violently ripped apart and scattered through the woods. Nick states that a similar thing happened at Munson Creek Falls a month ago. Nick then spots the jogger’s iPod. Back at the station they start looking into the case and cross-referencing the two reports. Nick then sees the face of a suspect who is under arrest in the station turn into the face of a beast.
Nick heads home and Hank tells him not to blow it, referring to Nick’s intention to propose to Juliette, his girlfriend. When Nick gets home though, he finds Juliette in the kitchen preparing supper and notices that they have a guest, an elderly woman, Nick’s aunt, Marie Kessler. As they hug, Marie whispers to Nick that they need to talk. They head outside into the street to talk and Marie tells Nick that she has cancer and that she doesn’t know how long she has left. She also asks him if he has been seeing any strange things lately. Nick admits that he has and Marie reveals that a gift is in the process of being passed to him, a gift which runs in the family. At that point, Marie notices someone in a car and says that Hulda is here and she produces a knife from her cane. Suddenly, Marie is attacked by another beast who leaps out of the bushes. Nick tries to help but Marie is stabbed and knocked to the ground by Hulda. He then comes after Nick but Nick shoots him and sees him transform from a beast back into a man.
Nick runs to help Marie and Marie apologises for bringing Hulda to his door. Before she passes out, she hands him a necklace and an amulet that she tells him never to lose and also reveals that his parents were murdered and they didn’t die in a crash, which is what Nick has always believed.
Nick calls Hank and tells him what has happened. Hank tells Nick to go to the hospital and that he’ll handle the crime scene. At the hospital Nick draws a sketch of what he saw, Hulda as a beast. Marie regains consciousness and tells Nick that the gift runs in their family, allowing people who possess it to see the creatures as they really are and that Nick is one of the last Grimms and that the fairy tales are real. Marie also tells him that everything he needs to learn the truth is in her trailer and she reminds him to never lose the necklace.
As Nick tries to learn more about his legacy, another case is reported. A young girl, Robin Howell, is reported missing by her mother and grandfather. She was heading over to her grandfather’s house but never showed up. While they gather information about Robin it turns out she was wearing a red sweater. Nick notes that Sylvie, the victim in the woods was also wearing a red sweater.
Nick and Hank retrace Robin’s supposed path through the streets around the park but Nick says that she might have ignored her mother and actually gone through the park instead. In the park Hank finds Robin’s backpack and they find bootprints that match the one found in the woods.
As they follow the boot prints out of the park, Nick notices a man coming out to collect his mail. As two you girls ride by, Nick sees the man’s face turn into that of a wolf and he turns and snarls at Nick. Nick bursts into the man’s house and demands to know what he has done with Robin but the man says nothing. Nick calls in the police to search the place but they find nothing and Hank says that they have nothing on him and wants to know why Nick thinks he is the right guy.
Later, Nick is watching the man at his house, whose name it turns out is Eddie Monroe. He watches Eddie go outside and urinate on his fence but then Eddie smells something in the air and goes back inside turning out the lights. However, Eddie has transformed into the wold and leaps through the window and slams Nick against a wall. He then chuckles and turns back into human form, inviting Nick inside for a beer. Over the beer, Eddie reveals himself to be a blutbad, or Big Bad Wolf. He also reveals that he know who Nick is and that he has heard stories of The Grimms, but has never met one, and observes that it looks like Nick is new to the game. Eddie says that he used to be a killer but that he now is able through various means to control his inner beast. He also says that his kind go wild when they see red.
Eddie is reluctant at first to help a Grimm track down what he assumes is another blutbad, but eventually agrees stating that the blutbad will keep Robin prisoner for a while, fattening her up before eating her. They drive through the woods following the scent that Eddie can smell and stop as they get close. He puts wolfsbane on them to mask their scent and they head out on foot, but as they cross a stream and find the cabin, Eddie starts to lose control and says that he might go berserk if he gets too close to another of his kind and so runs away leaving Nick on his own.
Nick calls Hank and says he’s found Robin. When Hank arrives, Nick puts wolfsbane on him and asks Hank to trust him. They head over to the cabin and knock on the door. A man comes to the door and invites them in but he isn’t wearing the boots. The pair ask about Robin but the man says he doesn’t know anything and invites them to look around the cabin, which they do, as the man hums a song. They find nothing. Back outside, Nick realises that the man was humming the same song that was on Sylvie’s iPod. They go back to the cabin and break down the door. The man attacks them in his creature form and tries to escape outside, but Hank shoots him in the back. They turn him over and the man has reverted to human form and utters just one word before dying, "Grimm". The cabin is searched and Robin is discovered and rescued.
Later, at the hospital, Nick tells Marie that he will do what he has to as a nurse comes in to give Marie some drugs. Nick however, sees her for what she is and fights her off. She injects Nick instead though and he collapses. She escapes and gets into a car with the police Captain saying that Nick intervened before she could kill Marie and that they will need to try again before she wakes up.
Then Marie wakes up…..
