After what seems like an eternity waiting for the second season of Falling Skies, it finally arrived as a two hour, two episode back to back event on TNT last night. The two episodes were, episode 1, Worlds Apart and episode 2, Shall We Gather at the River? So how did we get here? Well, if you remember, at the end of season 1, the 2nd Mass were on the verge of going all in with an attack against a command ship even though they were vastly under-resourced. As what’s left of the group try to head back to base, the aliens offer Tom the chance to parlez with them and against Weaver’s advice, he boarded their ship and off they went. It is now six months later as episode one opens and the 2nd Mass have ambushed an alien … Continue reading →

Ray Bradbury was one of Science Fiction and Fantasy’s visionaries and was the creator of many iconic stories, including Fahrenheit 451, The Martian Chronicles and The Illustrated Man. He didn’t only write Science Fiction and Fantasy though, having written several children’s books. In fact, he considered himself to have only written one Science Fiction book, which was Fahrenheit 451. The rest he said, were Fantasy, the difference being that in the World of Fantasy, nothing stands a chance of coming true, where as Science Fiction, very often ends up being Science Fact. Bradbury was born in Waukegan, Illinois, on 22nd August 1920, just at the right time he thought to be involved in Fantasy literature. He was the author of over 27 novels and story collections but was thought of as the master of the short story, having … Continue reading →

Ok, so this item isn’t directly anything to do with science fiction television but I figured it was important enough to at least mention. Eugene Polley, the inventor of the TV remote control has died at the age of 96 according to a report on the BBC News website. His 1955 invention was called the Flash-Matic and used light to turn the TV on and off and change channels. Over his 47 year career, Polley was granted 18 patents and was said to be proud of his invention. The first light controlled device was temperamental at best as other light sources would interfere with its function. However, over the years it was succeeded by a sonic version, and infr-red version and a version that used radio frequency. Originally seen as a luxury item long before the days of 100′s of … Continue reading →
