Star Trek: Deep Space Nine was the second spin off series to appear in the Star Trek franchise following the seven year run of Star Trek: The Next Generation
. This series was the first to be set in a fixed location rather than wandering around the galaxy as it is set on board a space station rather than a starship. The station, called Deep Space Nine by Starfleet is an ex Cardasian station and was taken over by Starfleet after the Cardasians were driven out of the area in order to try and protect, not only the planet of Bajor below it, but the nearby wormhole as well which is vital to trade in the area. The wormhole is also a stable link between the Alpha quadrant and the largely unexplored Delta quadrant, which in itself brings about plenty of problems for Captain Sisko and his crew to deal with.
