A joint federal task force known as Fringe Division and which is primarily supported by the FBI investigates cases related to fringe science, from transhumanist experiments gone wrong to the possibility of a destructive technological singularity and the possible collision of two parallel universes. The Fringe Division is headed up by Phillip Broyles who directs his primary agent on the ground, Olivia Dunham, and who is ably assisted by Dr. Walter Bishop, the archetypal mad scientist and his estranged son Peter and their work often intersects with advanced biotechnology developed by a company called Massive Dynamic which was founded by Walter’s former partner, Dr. William Bell.
The work of the team is also silently watched by a group of bald, pale white men known as Observers.
