Jean-Luc Picard spent his early years tending to the family vineyards with his brother Robert and he also took piano lessons but gave that up because he feared performing in front of an audience. Although it was his father’s wish that he continue to work at the vineyards it was obvious early on that Jean-Luc’s heart was set on joining Starfleet. Although this was not condoned by his father, Jean-Luc’s initial attempt to join Starfleet Academy failed but upon his second attempt in 2323, he was successful. It is whilst at Starfleet Academy that Jean-Luc developed an interest in archaeology.
After graduating at the top of his class but as a new ensign he nearly lost his life when he was stabbed through the heart by a Nausicaan during a bar brawl. He underwent successful emergency surgery to replace his heart as a consequence.
Jean-Luc Picard is mainly remembered as a revered Starfleet officer but was also a skilled diplomat with an interest in archaeology and history. During his service within Starfleet he served as the commanding officer of several starships, including the USS Stargazer, USS Enterprise-D, and the USS Enterprise-E, serving aboard her, the sixth star Federation starship to bear the name until at least the early 2380s. During the missions he took part in whilst serving aboard these ships he has the distinction of making first contact with no fewer than 27 alien species, including the Ferengi and most infamously, the Borg.
Following his adventures as commander of the Enterprise-E he rose in rank to Admiral, and although he resigned his commission sometime afterwards he subsequently rejoined to become Chancellor of Starfleet Academy.
